Facts Don’t Lie…

HISTORIAN: THOMAS JEFFERSON WAS PRO-RELIGION

David Barton

Thomas Jefferson wasn’t a secularist, as he’s often portrayed, but an active supporter of religion who funded efforts by the federal government to spread Christianity.

“Separation of church and state” had a different meaning in his time.

And the man who wrote the Declaration of Independence was always “pro-Jesus, pro-Christian, pro-religion.”

That was the message historian and author David Barton brought to a fast-paced and wide-ranging interview with Gina Loudon on her show, “America Trends.”

Barton, author of “The Jefferson Lies,” unveiled surprising truths about the hidden history and common misconceptions surrounding the nation’s third president.

Barton, whom Loudon called the “foremost expert on Jefferson,” explained Jefferson was not the “deist” he is often portrayed as by secularist revisionists.

“Jefferson was definitely not a deist, not even close to it,” Barton said. “Part of the problem we have today is that our definition of deist is not even close to what it was in that day. The definition of deist today, the synonyms in the dictionary, say akin to atheist, agnostic. Nowhere close to that. Jefferson said very clearly late in life he could never be an atheist.”

Barton argued Jefferson did not believe in the “clockmaker god” who simply wound up the universe and didn’t intervene in human affairs. At the same time, Barton explained, Jefferson was not a follower of conventional orthodox Christian belief, especially late in his life.

Yet despite these doctrinal departures, Barton claimed “there never was a time when he was not pro-Jesus, pro-Christian or pro-religion.”

Jefferson questioned whether certain Scriptures were inspired and even the divine nature of Christ. However, Barton explained Jefferson never was a secularist and promoted organized religion in the new republic.

“It is interesting that through 1876 the largest church in the United States was the one that met inside the U.S. Capitol, something that Jefferson helped start,” Barton said. “He attended that church for eight years as president, he attended before that as vice president. He helped get it started as secretary of state under George Washington. So throughout his public career he was very public about helping religion.”

Barton told Loudon that Jefferson’s involvement with religion wasn’t limited to simply attending services in the Capitol.

“As president, he took federal funds to fund missionaries to Indian groups,” Jefferson said. “He helped fund Christian schools. He helped fund a lot of things, including Christian churches in the United States seat of government, Washington, D.C., not only in the Capitol but in the Treasury Building and the War Department. Nothing about Jefferson says secularist in any way, shape or form, although some of his doctrines from a Christian standpoint would be fairly heterodox.”

Loudon noted that Jefferson’s belief in the “separation of church and state” is sometimes used against any attempt to honor religion in the public square. Barton said the secularist understanding of “separation of church and state” was different than the modern conception.

“Separation of church and state is a really good thing if you define it right,” Barton said. “The way Jefferson defined it is exactly right. Where you have a state-established church, you do not have freedom of conscience; you do not have religious toleration. You have religious coercion.”

The Founding Fathers, Barton explained, were deeply affected by the British experience with a state church.

“We came out of a system with Great Britain where they had a state established church, and if you were on the outside of that looking in you’ve got serious problems,” Barton said. “You’re facing jail time, sometimes penalties. America was populated by people who had been nailed because they weren’t part of the state-established church.”

Thus, Barton told Loudon, Jefferson’s advocacy of the “separation of church and state” wasn’t about banishing religion from the public square but making sure the federal government did not establish a church.

Barton said Jefferson saw firsthand how Christians who did not belong to the Anglican state church in his native Virginia suffered legal penalties. For that reason, Barton argued, Jefferson wanted to make sure nothing similar was created in the new republic.

“When he called for separation of church and state, it was the denominational separation,” said Barton. “He wanted free exercise of religion. You choose your denomination, if at all, but the government can’t tell you what denomination to be a part of.”

The phrase “separation of church and state” was used by Jefferson in a famous letterto a Baptist congregation in Connecticut. Barton told Loudon this was an assurance by Jefferson to the Baptists that there would be no national established church, thus giving the Baptists religious freedom.

But as Barton observed, “That’s not what it means today.”

The historian argued that expressions of religious belief should be permitted in the public square, and he bemoaned secularist efforts to remove recognition of religion on currency and in courtrooms.

“Why is religious speech not free speech?” asked Barton. “We allow all sorts of free speech on state property. Why is it no longer free speech if it’s religious speech?”

According to the original intent of the Constitution, Barton argued, expressions such as “In God We Trust” on coins are permissible because no official denomination or state church is being established.

Barton also dismissed secularist claims of creeping theocracy.

“That means they don’t know what the word theocratic means, because as long as you have free elections, you cannot be theocratic,” Barton said. “Theocratic means you are ruled by an elite that hears from God and acts on behalf of the people.

“We’re big into people choosing their own leaders. If they choose leaders of faith and follow the Constitution, there’s no chance of them being theocrats. So what [secularists] do is they use these pejoratives, these ad hominems to accuse us of theocracy. I, for one, never am and never will be, because I’ll always be for the people choosing their leaders as designed by the Constitution. Which is inherently opposed to theocracy.”

However, Barton acknowledged theocracy is a real threat to the world. And he told Loudon the threat is coming from a source many leftists don’t want to confront – the religion of Islam.

“If you look at Iran, it certainly is [a theocracy],” said Barton. “If you look at where the Muslim Brotherhood has had great influence, it certainly is. And that has been a problem.”

But Barton said that as unlikely as it seems, it’s Thomas Jefferson himself who can serve as a model for how to respond to the challenge of radical Islam.

“It was Jefferson who fought the first war on terror,” said Barton. “Jefferson never believed [Islam] was a religion of peace. He did not believe we should fight terrorism by drawing back from it but by confronting it. Exactly the opposite of what we do today.”

Origins of Islamic Extremism

An amazing article about the origins of Islamic Extremism. This is simply awesome and NEEDED to understand where we are and the history of how this has been dealt with.

How did our Founding Fathers deal with this threat?

Brendon Burchard – “In Need Of Leaders”

The world is in dire need of leaders. Because we lack them, so many individuals and institutions are barreling blindly in the dark. Society is not being moored to the demands of good character and the expectations to serve the common good. And so the world is intoxicated by greed, mad passions, and intolerance. Without leaders at the helm of humanity, what should be a joyous collective ride toward hope, freedom, and abundance for all is instead a terrible, directionless drive with spoiled brats too ignorant and proud to ask for directions, a careening vehicle headed to catastrophe.

We must begin again the great work of uplifting humankind. Our times demand vision and disciplined, collaborative effort to make a real difference. These things are inspired and sustained by good leaders.

And so let us ask ourselves, “What can be done to improve this world that I influence? How can I help others solve problems and achieve their dreams? Who can I enlist and empower to help achieve something remarkable? How can I unlock the potential of those around me to do more good?

Perhaps if more people asked these kinds of questions, we could stop society’s headlong drive into oblivion.

Yet some of us fear taking a leadership role. But what is our excuse? In the final reckoning of our life’s legacy, shall we explain to our Creator that He did not equip us well enough for the task? No. We forget the excuses and remember our duty to serve something larger than ourselves.

Can We Play Fantasy…Politics?

“Deflate-Gate.” Who has heard of it? I’m sure if your head is not buried in the sand you have heard of this by now.

That term alone has led me to ponder why our culture is so infatuated with a GAME. A game in which has NO bearing on life. I mean, if you told me, “Brandon, this is the Hunger Games and people are going to die.” Then maybe it would be something of value or concern. Speaking of that, kind of reminds me of “The Colosseum.” Funny thing, that was a remnant of an empire distracting its citizens to what it was doing through the medium of cheap entertainment. Sound familiar?

It is peculiar that an entire nation would be so apathetic as to let the freest and most amazing country in the course of human history fall by the way side. Or is it that shocking?

Humans are creatures of habit and it seems that one of those habits is to continually let other men rule over them. Instead of learning from its ancestor’s mistakes and having the gumption to be able to rule itself; we continue to fall in to the perpetual trap of tyrannical oppression.

Our culture fantasizes over how my quarterback did and how many points my running back earned me this weekend. We scrutinize the New England Patriots and whether they messed with FOOTBALLS and analyze it to no end. Where is the media and where are the people when it come to real scandals? Benghazi? Fast and Furious? Solyndra? NSA? IRS? Un-equal pay in White House? Etc.?

Can you imagine if people scrutinized and broke down our politicians week in and week out? Wow! We would have amazing accountability. I bet you our country would be light years ahead and we probably wouldn’t be nearing $20,000,000,000,000 in national debt.

Just saying.

Why don’t we play fantasy politics? Put money on it? Make it fun? It’s not like we don’t have money on it anyway, right? I mean by my math we all have somewhere in the neighborhood of $60,000 in the pot each. That’s just current debt from the government. Doesn’t include your annual personal debt/expenses.

Isn’t the point of the American experiment to see if man can rule himself? Or will he fall in to the habits that his ancestors routinely succumbed to and be overridden by cheap entertainment and “what feels good” at the moment?

If we played fantasy politics we could set up a scoring system…we could track it all and break it down week in and week out, just like football. Maybe that will keep people more engaged? Maybe it’s not enough just saying “hey, these taxes or this healthcare system or this law is going to drastically alter or affect the rest of your life”, maybe that just isn’t enough. So, we will implement a fantasy politics game in place of that. This way people can understand the importance politics, history, and law play in our lives and make it a little bit more fun and engaging. We all know it could use that.

This may sound like fun and games but seriously, if we analyzed the people who lead us and would like to; I think we would be a much more efficient and unified country. The point of the media and an informed electorate is to watch over the government and to make sure that they are staying the course of freedom and liberty.

Our founders knew what they were doing when they separated the branches of government. They purposely did this so things would NOT get done and branches checked one another. The problems we do have are SOLELY because of all the things that DID get done; the implementation of the income tax, the creation of the federal reserve, the Social Security system, Welfare, the department of education, Obamacare, and on and on.

The natural arc of government leads towards “getting things done” and passing laws. The more power you have the more laws you pass and the more laws you pass the more power you have. Do not be mistaken; the people who have power are the elites, the ones in control. Does not matter if you are Republican or Democrat or conservative or liberal. Just ask the millions of poor innocent souls who lived under dictatorships in the 20th century in Russia, China, etc.. There were just two classes: the rich/elite and the poor/peasant. There was no conservative and progressive. They all suffered equally. Just as we will all suffer equally.

Do not get fooled by people who say things need to get done. The government does not get things done, people get things done. The people make the government look good. Government does not make people or a country look good.

Now, I have not said that “no government” is good. I have talked about what makes our government great and that is the way we were founded, the laws that have been set up and put in place during our founding – the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Limited government with many restrictions on what it could do to its people. Not huge massive centralized government or no government at all. But, the government that is limited in its scope and does what it is supposed to do; protect us with the military and provide and manage roads. That is PRECISELY what made us great, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. If you don’t believe me, just ask the millions and millions of immigrants why they came here over the last couple hundred years. They will gladly tell you.

The point of this article is fun and games but also very serious. Anyway to make history and politics more interesting so more people will be informed and engaged will only help our nation. If you want true “PROGRESS” then getting people to pay attention and inform themselves is what we should be talking about. This is a uniting cause that stretches – as I mentioned earlier – across both sides. We both will suffer greatly and equally if we do not come together and band against those who seek and desire constant power. The greatest president we’ve ever had, George Washington, was forced to be the first president of the United States and served honorably for two terms and then resigned voluntarily back to his estate in Mount Vernon. He DID NOT seek power, we FORCED it on him. He was a servant leader and that is something our country is sorely missing.

Leaders eat last, they do not eat first.
